Five Stages of Awakening
A practical map of transformation through five stages (Drowning to Radiating), each with specific practices, recognizing we spiral through these stages repeatedly across different life areas.
The spiritual journey is not a straight line, but it does have recognizable stages. Understanding where you are can help you find the right practice for right now, rather than trying to apply a teaching meant for a different stage. There are five stages, and you will move through them not once but many times, in many areas of your life.
The first stage is Drowning. You are underwater. Life is overwhelming. You cannot see which way is up. Depression, addiction, crisis, trauma -- something has pulled you under and you are just trying to survive. In this stage, the only practice that matters is Tiger: one step, one breath, one tiny action. Do not try to understand why you are here. Do not try to build a plan. Just get your head above water.
The second stage is Treading Water. You are no longer drowning, but you are not going anywhere. You are surviving but not thriving. You have a routine, a job, a life that functions on the surface -- but underneath there is a deadness, a going-through-the-motions quality. Many people spend years or even decades in this stage without realizing it. The practice here is to recognize the treading water for what it is and to begin wanting something more. This is where clarity begins to matter -- the recognition that the gap between where you are and where you could be has become intolerable.
The third stage is Swimming. You are now actively moving in a direction. You have a practice. You are working with your patterns. You are developing clarity, following your heart signal, using the reality creation loop. This is where most of the hard work happens -- the daily discipline of choosing consciousness over autopilot, joy over numbness, engagement over avoidance. Snow Lion energy is essential here, because without joy the swimming becomes grinding, and grinding leads back to treading water.
The fourth stage is Flying. This is Garuda territory. You have developed enough inner strength and clarity that fear no longer stops you. You fly directly into what you previously avoided. This is where bold, outrageous action becomes possible -- the leaps of faith, the radical honesty, the creative risks that reshape your life. Flying does not mean the absence of difficulty. It means meeting difficulty with openness and confidence rather than contraction and defense.
The fifth stage is Radiating. This is Dragon energy. You are no longer efforting to transform. Wisdom and compassion flow naturally from who you have become. Your very presence helps others. You create without forcing. You love without agenda. You act from a place of such deep alignment that the right action is simply obvious.
These stages are not a one-way ladder. You can be Flying in your career and Drowning in your intimate relationships. You can be Radiating in your spiritual practice and Treading Water in your health. And a major life event can knock you from Flying back to Drowning in an instant. This is not failure -- this is the spiral nature of the path. Each time you return to an earlier stage, you return with more wisdom, more tools, and more compassion for yourself. The stages are a map, not a judgment. Use them to find where you are, and then find the practice that meets you there.
