- How to Hear Your Heart’s True Voice (And What Happens When You Follow It)
Want to see what happens when you actually follow it? A sofa cushion on the deck, a job that appeared from nowhere, a life turned toward True North. Let's go in.
- Committing to the Spiritual Journey: A Poem
There comes a moment when you can't pretend any more that you didn't hear it. I wrote this poem when I put my metaphorical backpack on and committed to the road, wherever it led. Listen for the bells.
- Fear means GO not STOP! Make your Heart Sing
Listen, step. And when you're preparing instead of stepping, fear gets loud. Here's the reversal: fear isn't the stop sign. It's your heart miaowing, like a cat that won't stop until it's actually fed.
- Fearlessness
Step back and see the whole practice. Fearlessness was never the absence of fear — it's the willingness to move toward what matters while fear is screaming, with an open, tender heart.
- The Garuda: Fearlessness
Now train it in the body. Like Garuda, born in the sky, practice letting go and flying into vast space — beyond fear, as your confidence and trust grow.
- Coming Out and Coming Alive: From Terror to Joy on Grafton Street
Coming out is one of Garuda's outrageous acts. Here it is in my own life: years under 'WHAT IF THEY FIND OUT', a terrified tram ride to the Castro, and then, within three weeks, telling everyone. Come skip down Grafton Street with me, arms full of flowers.
- Licking the Blade of Nowness: the Courage to Say Yes and the Life-Changing Choice of a Single Moment
Some edges give you three seconds. In a forest grove: decades of shame on one side, the heart screaming on the other. And every moment is a knife edge like this one — let's lick the blade of nowness.
- How to Create the Courage to Follow Your Calling: The Path of Fearlessness
Now let's make it a training. Learn your fearprint — the particular way your fears hide and steer — and melt it with compassion, wax on, wax off, so that when your heart calls you to create something in the world, you can go.
Heart Signal
The heart signal is your deepest self's quiet 'yes' that arises before fear and practicality drown it out. Learning to hear and follow this signal — through noticing bodily responses and what makes you yearn — leads you toward a genuinely alive life rather than the safe but dead existence your fears have constructed.
Inside you, right now, your heart is saying something. It is saying it quietly, underneath all the noise of your thoughts, your obligations, your fears, and your plans. It is saying yes to something. Yes, let us play. Yes, that is what I want. Yes, that is who I am. And almost immediately, another voice rises up and quashes it. That is not practical. You cannot afford that. Who do you think you are? What will people think?
This is the heart signal -- that flash of genuine desire, genuine knowing, genuine direction that arises from your deepest self before the mind has time to intervene. It is not loud. It does not argue or insist. It simply says yes and then waits to see if you will listen. Most of the time, you do not. Most of the time, the other voices are so much louder and so much more practiced that the heart signal gets drowned out before you even register it was there.
Learning to hear the heart signal is one of the most important skills you can develop. It speaks in specific ways. It speaks through yearning -- that ache in your chest when you see someone doing the thing you secretly wish you could do. It speaks through what makes your eyes water -- not from sadness but from the overwhelming feeling of being touched by something true. It speaks through the body -- a warmth, an expansion, a leaning forward. And it speaks in that split-second moment before the mind kicks in with all its reasons why not.
The competing voices are loud and many. There is the voice of fear: what if it does not work out? There is the voice of practicality: you have bills to pay. There is the voice of other people: what will they think of you? There is the voice of unworthiness: who are you to want that? These voices are not evil -- they are trying to keep you safe. But safe and alive are not the same thing. You can be perfectly safe and completely dead inside. The heart signal is the voice that calls you toward being fully alive.
The challenge is that most of us have spent decades ignoring the heart signal. We have gotten so good at listening to the other voices that we have lost the ability to hear our own heart. We do not even know what we want anymore. When someone asks what do you want, we go blank, or we say what we think we should want, or we list practical goals that have nothing to do with what our heart is actually asking for.
The practice is to slow down enough to catch it. When you are making a decision -- even a small one -- notice what happens in your body before your mind starts analyzing. There is a moment, just a flash, where your heart responds. It leans toward one option. It lights up. It says yes. Train yourself to notice that moment. You do not have to act on it every time -- just notice it. Over time, you will get better at distinguishing the heart signal from the noise. And as you begin to follow it -- tentatively at first, then with growing trust -- you will find that it leads you toward a life that is genuinely yours, not the life your fears constructed for you.
