Land of Monsters

A three-layer model of self revealing how we construct false personas to hide our deepest shame-beliefs (the 'land of monsters'), which themselves obscure our radiant true nature — and how speaking these monsters aloud to a committed listener dissolves their power.

Picture yourself as three concentric circles, three layers of self. The outermost layer is the self you have created for the world to see. It is the version of you that you want others to encounter -- successful, strong, put together, happy. You have spent years constructing this layer, and it is designed to be lovable and acceptable. But it is full of cracks, triggers, and defensive mechanisms, because it is built from a fundamental confusion. This is where you act from your strategies, your reactions, your masks, your habitual personality. It exists to cover over what is beneath.

Because below that outer shell, there is a layer you do not want anyone to see. This is the land of monsters. The monsters are the thoughts about yourself that have been repeated so many times they have solidified into what feel like facts. I am ugly. I am worthless. I am stupid. I am unlovable. I am defective and broken. I do not belong. These are not passing thoughts anymore -- they have become the bedrock of your secret self-concept, the version of you that you believe is the real truth underneath all the masks.

This is not a pretty view. And so you escape by building and maintaining that outer layer. It makes perfect sense. Why would you want to subject the people you love, your colleagues, your friends, to the disaster of a person you believe you really are? And so you run, you hide, you pretend, you drink, you control, you scroll, you smile, you avoid. Anything to keep from going deeper into the land of monsters. Your survival feels like it depends on never looking too closely at what is in there.

But here is what you cannot see from where you stand: beyond the land of monsters, at the very core, is what you really are. A radiant being of love, light, connection, playfulness, and presence. This is your essence, your true nature. And it is shining constantly -- whether you know it or not. The deep wisdom teachings all point to this same truth. Your innermost nature is not the monsters. It never was.

The problem is that from inside the land of monsters, you cannot see this light. Your belief in the monsters acts as a barrier, keeping you involved with avoiding them rather than seeing through them to what lies beyond. And so from this not-seeing, you keep building the outer shell, keep numbing out, keep pretending. The monsters only exist in the form they do because you are avoiding them. When you actually turn toward them -- when you name them out loud, when you speak them to another human being in the presence of committed listening -- something remarkable happens. They begin to lose their grip. After saying your deepest shame out loud over and over, you may even start to laugh. The facts that felt so solid begin to reveal themselves as just habitual ways of thinking, mental objects that arise and fall away, surrounded by gaps.

The journey through the land of monsters requires real courage, real willingness, and real practice. You need to find the right listener -- someone who can hold space for your monsters without flinching, without trying to fix you, without turning away. You need to speak what is truly going on beneath the outer shell, not the stories you have become so skilled at telling. And you need to keep moving, one step at a time, even when every part of you wants to retreat back to the safety of the surface. The path does not go around the land of monsters. It goes directly through it. And on the other side of that journey is the recognition of who you have always been.
